CDM Smith, a global engineering and construction firm, engaged MPA to help relocate their global headquarters – and create a more current, collaborative, and engaging space that would appeal to its multi-generational workforce – on a challenging seven-month fast-track schedule.
The project team delivered, on schedule, a high performance workspace that reflects the values and branding of CDM Smith. The headquarters features workstations and bench seating in an open plan setting, glass-front offices, conference rooms with audiovisual technology, huddle and focus rooms, café-style lounges, a design-build center, an automation lab, and a multi-purpose room for training and all-staff meetings.
A prefabricated wall partition system was used for all spaces except the kitchen on each floor. Most private offices are located on the interior, preserving natural light and views in open plan areas. Wall murals and inspirational quotes were strategically placed for branding.
Flexibility was considered in the design of private offices and in furniture selection, enabling offices to double as meeting spaces. Overall, the quantity of meeting space increased by 133 percent in the new headquarters, and collaboration has increased by 160 percent.
The design of an open and fresh headquarters sends the corporate message that the company is committed to a more collaborative and efficient way of working. Since moving in, staff has taken quickly to the new way of working – and the spontaneous collaboration spaces that support it.
