Having recently acquired nearly 280,000 square feet of office space, OneBeacon Insurance wanted to consolidate employees from several existing locations in Foxboro and downtown Boston to a new headquarters in Canton. OneBeacon is one of the leading property/casualty insurance groups doing business solely through independent agents.
The organization attributes its success to open communication between all groups, including senior management, and a belief that sharing ideas is important. To support this culture, OneBeacon asked Margulies Perruzzi Architects to design their headquarters with no private offices and a generous number of conference rooms for the approximately 1,200 employees who will work there.
Working closely with renowned landscape architect Nelson Hammer, RLA, Principal of Hammer Design, the design team also transformed an unappealing existing courtyard into an interior urban park with fountains, benches and greenery to meet OneBeacon’s request for an environment where employees want to stay in the building to eat lunch and relax.
Additionally, the 1960s-style cafeteria and food servery were completely gutted to create a new kitchen and concession area. Additional employee benefits include a newly refurbished and expanded fitness center and a health services suite.
